A job is not a natural object. A job is a bundle of tasks that became stable enough, valuable enough, and administratively convenient enough for a firm to wrap a salary around it.

That sounds obvious, but it is where most of the confusion about AI and employment begins. When people say AI will not replace jobs, it will replace tasks, they are saying something true in a way that can become deeply misleading. Jobs are made of tasks. More importantly, entry level jobs are often made of exactly the kinds of tasks that AI is beginning to do well.

This is why Jensen Huang’s "Jobs vs Tasks" argument is comforting but incomplete. His version, roughly, is that people misunderstand work when they reduce a job to a task. Writing code is a task, but the purpose of a software engineer is to solve problems. Typing and talking are tasks, but the purpose of a CEO is not typing and talking. Therefore, when AI automates the task, the purpose survives. That is a smart argument, and for many senior workers it is probably right. The senior engineer is not valuable because they can type code. The senior lawyer is not valuable because they can produce words. The senior analyst is not valuable because they can assemble a spreadsheet. They are valuable because they know what matters, what can go wrong, what the client is really asking, what the system can tolerate, and which mistake will be expensive. Huang has made this task versus purpose distinction explicitly in arguing that AI will create jobs rather than destroy them.

But the first rung of white collar work is not built out of purpose. It is built out of task. A junior employee is hired because there is work that needs doing before the person has much judgment. The first year analyst builds the model. The junior lawyer reviews documents and drafts memos. The junior developer writes tests, fixes bugs, and implements well scoped features. The marketing associate produces first drafts. The customer support agent answers common questions until they have seen enough edge cases to become useful in harder ones. The research assistant summarizes, formats, checks, compares, and prepares. None of this is glamorous. Much of it is repetitive. Much of it is annoying. Much of it is beneath the senior person’s opportunity cost. But that is exactly why the junior job exists.

The old bargain was very simple. Firms hired juniors because juniors did low level work that was still economically useful. Juniors tolerated the low level work because it was the path to becoming someone whose judgment mattered. The senior reviewed the junior’s work. The junior learned by being corrected. The firm got leverage. The worker got training. A hierarchy reproduced itself. The point was never only production, and it was never only education. It was both at once. The dirty little secret of apprenticeship is that it has always been cross-subsidized by drudge work.

AI does not need to replace the senior lawyer to reduce the need for junior lawyers. It only needs to do enough first pass document review, clause comparison, and memo drafting that the senior lawyer can supervise a machine instead of supervising a person. It does not need to replace the senior engineer. It only needs to do enough scaffolding, boilerplate, test writing, and bug fixing that the team needs fewer graduates. It does not need to replace the consultant. It only needs to build the first draft of the deck, summarize the market, structure the interview notes, and turn messy inputs into something a manager can polish. The senior who remains experiences AI as augmentation. The junior who would have been hired experiences AI as non-entry.

AI labor shock might not look like a layoff wave. It might look like silence. No dramatic firing. No empty office. No mass unemployment line. Just fewer graduate roles, fewer 0 to 2 year postings, fewer summer associates, fewer junior developers, fewer analyst classes, more “entry level” roles asking for experience, and more young people applying to more jobs with less success. The unemployment rate can look fine while the labor market quietly stops building the bottom rung.

The best emerging evidence points exactly in that direction. Stanford’s “Canaries in the Coal Mine” paper uses high frequency administrative payroll data and finds that early career workers, ages 22 to 25, in the most AI-exposed occupations experienced a 16% relative employment decline after generative AI diffused, while more experienced workers in the same occupations and workers in less-exposed fields were stable or continued growing. The study also finds the decline concentrated in occupations where AI is more likely to automate rather than augment human labor. This is not the clean story of “AI destroys everyone’s job.” It is the more interesting and more dangerous story of seniority-biased disruption.

The Bank of Korea looked at National Pension Service administrative records and found that over three years, youth jobs fell by 211,000, with 208,000 of those losses in industries highly exposed to AI. Over the same period, employment among workers in their fifties rose by 209,000, including 146,000 in highly AI exposed industries. The Bank of Korea described this as “seniority biased technological change,” which is the phrase that should haunt the entire debate. It means AI can be good for experienced workers and bad for inexperienced workers at the same time, in the same industries, for the same reason.

This is where Jensen’s reassurance starts to fail. He is right that the senior person’s purpose survives task automation. But in many firms, the junior person’s economic justification is the task. The senior has purpose. The junior has work. The senior has context. The junior is acquiring context. The senior has judgment. The junior is supposed to build judgment by doing the work AI is now absorbing. So when you say “AI replaces tasks, not jobs,” you may be describing a productivity gain for the top of the hierarchy and a hiring freeze at the bottom.

Goldman Sachs’s April 2026 analysis gives the same story a macroeconomic frame. Their economists estimate that AI reduced monthly U.S. payroll growth by about 16,000 jobs over the prior year and raised unemployment by about 0.1 percentage point, which is tiny in aggregate terms. But the interesting part is the decomposition. AI substitution reduced jobs, AI augmentation added some back, and the negative effects appear to fall largely on younger, less experienced workers. In other words, the aggregate effect is small because the economy is big, messy, and full of offsets. The cohort effect can still be real.

So there is a trap: The optimists keep looking for a macro apocalypse and, not finding one, declare the fear overblown. The pessimists keep looking for a clean replacement story and sometimes overstate the immediacy of the damage. But labor markets do not usually change like cartoons. They change through margins. A class size is cut by 8%. A graduate intake is delayed. A law firm offers fewer summer associate slots. A software team hires one senior and no juniors. A support organization lets attrition do the work. A bank tells managers to slow hiring while productivity tools roll out. Nothing looks like the end of work. Everything looks like discipline.

Europe gives the same kind of signal. Stepstone’s analysis of more than four million job ads in Germany found that the share of entry level postings in Q1 2025 was 45% below the five year average, lower even than during the first months of the pandemic. The decline was especially sharp in traditional office roles, while people-facing professions did better. In the UK, the Institute of Student Employers reported graduate vacancies down 8%, apprentice vacancies up 8 percent, and 140 applications per graduate vacancy, the highest level in its three-decade dataset. These are not pure AI datasets. They include weak growth, high rates, post-pandemic hiring correction, and employer caution. But they describe the same narrowing at the point of entry.

The same thing is visible in the culture of software. Traditional computer and information science enrollment at U.S. four year institutions fell 8.1% in fall 2025, while graduate enrollment fell 14%, even as overall postsecondary enrollment grew. Students are not necessarily abandoning technology, but they are updating their view of the old path. Data science, analytics, and more applied technical fields are becoming more attractive because the simple story, learn to code, get a junior software job, climb the ladder, no longer feels as sturdy.

Inside engineering organizations, the anxiety is even more direct. LeadDev’s 2025 AI Impact Report found that 54% of respondents expected less junior developer hiring over the long term because of AI coding tools, while many also expected junior engineers to face less hands on experience, faster turnaround expectations, and reduced direct mentoring. That is the apprenticeship problem in plain language. Even if AI makes the individual junior more productive, it may reduce the number of juniors firms believe they need.

The National Association for Law Placement has reported that the most recent recruiting cycle produced the lowest median number of offers for 2L summer programs on record, with average summer class sizes falling to their lowest level since 2020 and the largest firms seeing their smallest classes since 2012. The legal market has many confounders, including overhiring, demand cycles, and changes to recruiting timelines, but law is one of the clearest examples of a leverage model built on junior labor. If document review, research, diligence, and first-pass drafting become more machine-mediated, the structure of training changes. The senior lawyer remains valuable. The question is how many juniors are needed beneath them. An industry can add jobs while reducing the junior share. A firm can grow while hiring fewer graduates. A senior worker can become more productive while the apprentice beneath them disappears. A country can show stable wages and hours while young workers are quietly diverted into different paths. Aggregate adjustment can coexist with cohort damage.

AI does not have to permanently destroy aggregate employment to damage a cohort. The economy can adjust and still be cruel about who absorbs the adjustment. The next generation might find new paths. Some current workers might become AI auditors, workflow designers, data supervisors, agent managers, applied automation specialists, or domain experts using tools that do not yet have stable names. But the people entering the market during the transition may still get squeezed.

The technical reason is that generative AI is not merely routine biased in the old automation sense. The older automation story was about machines replacing predictable manual or clerical routines while leaving cognitive ambiguity to humans. Generative AI is different because it is strong at codified cognitive work. It can draft, summarize, classify, translate, compare, code, search, and synthesize. It is bad at some things, especially embodied judgment, true accountability, deep context, and social trust. But those are often senior attributes. The machine is good at the things juniors do before they have earned the right to exercise judgment.

Anthropic’s Economic Index is useful because it looks at actual usage rather than theoretical exposure. Its March 2026 report says about 49% of jobs have seen at least a quarter of their tasks performed using Claude, and it notes that coding tasks continue migrating from Claude.ai into more automated API workflows. That distinction matters. A chatbot used by a worker is often augmentation. An API embedded into a workflow starts to look more like production infrastructure. The more AI moves from sidekick to system, the more plausible the junior substitution channel becomes.

Dario’s strongest warnings, including his claim that AI could wipe out half of entry level white collar jobs and push unemployment sharply higher, may still be too aggressive in timeline and magnitude. The evidence does not yet support a clean mass-unemployment story. Axios reported those warnings in 2025, and they remain plausible as a severe-risk scenario, not as an established fact.

Jensen is right that AI does not simply erase the purpose of a profession. He is right that workers who use AI may outperform those who do not. He is right that many forms of demand will expand. He is right that radiologists, lawyers, engineers, and executives are not reducible to one automatable subtask. But he is wrong if he thinks this distinction protects the labor market. A junior job is not protected by the senior purpose of the profession. It is protected only as long as the junior task bundle remains worth paying a human to perform.

The story to watch is whether the old system for producing expertise survives contact with a machine that can perform the work people used to learn on. If firms keep seniors, give them AI, raise output expectations, and quietly reduce junior hiring, then AI has not destroyed the profession. It has damaged the reproduction mechanism of the profession. It has preserved the top while thinning the bottom.

That is maybe a more difficult problem than mass unemployment, and perhaps more politically dangerous because it hides inside productivity. The dashboard looks fine. Revenue per employee improves. Senior workers are busier than ever. The firm says it is not replacing people, only becoming more efficient. The unemployment rate does not scream. And yet a 23 y/o cannot get the job that teaches them how to become a 23 y/o with judgment.

The private incentive is obvious: automate the first pass, keep the experienced reviewer, and hire fewer beginners. The social need is equally obvious: keep producing people who know what they are doing. Those incentives are not automatically aligned. They may be actively diverging... This is the economic problem hiding underneath the AI jobs debate. The problem is that apprenticeship was never a separate institution from production. It lived inside the work. If AI removes enough of that work, we do not merely save time. We remove the place where judgment was supposed to form.

Jensen’s optimism works if the question is whether human purpose survives task automation. It fails if the question is whether firms will continue paying inexperienced people to develop purpose once the tasks that funded their development can be done by machines. The early indicators are not reassuring.
